About the Pilgrimage In last month’s edition of the Huron Church News, we presented a look at the many wonderful events planned for the celebration of 150 years of ministry in the Diocese of Huron in 2007. Over the next several months, as our celebration moves into full speed, we’ll take a look at many of the individual events that will be part of this thanksgiving for faith. The Rev’d Catherine Ascah is coordinating the Pilgrimage of the Cross and shares these thoughts. Pilgrimages allow time for serious reflection. Whether one is trekking El Caminode Santiago de Compostela, hiking up Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, Ireland or journeying the Labyrinth at Medaille House in London, Ontario, pilgrimages bring us towards holy places where we might reflect upon our relationship with God and our place in that relationship. The pilgrimage of the Sesqui Centennial Cross throughout Huron during 2006-07 will allow for this same reflection. A cross from the Cathedral Church of St. Paul will depart from its current home in December of 2006 and begin a thirteen month pilgrimage around the Diocese. The cross's design is such that the crucified Christ is bathed in a brilliant gold background light, while beneath, etched into the dark base, is the kneeling Christ, foot basin and towel at hand. The starkly contrasting images remind us of the radiant glory of Christ's victorious resurrection, and our own calls to Christ-like humble servant hood. In the words of our Sesqui theme – light and life. Each parish will have the chance to welcome this particular, communal cross of Christ into their midst and to reflect on what the cross has meant to them in the past, as well as what it is calling them to do now and in the future. In addition, the presence of the cross from the see city will provide parishes the opportunity to consider their place and their role in the wider Diocesan family, and the Church throughout the world. Taking stewardship of the cross for one day or a few will allow for different communities to come together around this central symbol of our faith. Accompanying the cross will be a journal, where people may share their reflections, thoughts and prayers. It is hoped that pictures and live video will be taken, and submitted for uploading on the Sesquicentennial website, so that people throughout the Diocese, and Diocesan family members who live abroad might follow the cross's progression. We are called to be disciples of Jesus, living lives in His service, working for justice and carrying the Cross of Christ in the world. Take up the cross as it arrives in your midst!
