About the Pilgrimage

In last month’s edition of the Huron Church News, we presented a look at the many wonderful events planned for the celebration of 150 years of ministry in the Diocese of Huron in 2007.  Over the next several months, as our celebration moves into full speed, we’ll take a look at many of the individual events that will be part of this thanksgiving for faith.  The Rev’d Catherine Ascah is coordinating the Pilgrimage of the Cross and shares these thoughts.

Pilgrimages allow time for serious reflection.  Whether one is trekking El Caminode Santiago de Compostela, hiking up Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, Ireland or journeying the Labyrinth at Medaille House in London, Ontario, pilgrimages bring us towards holy places where we might reflect upon our relationship with God and our place in that relationship.

The pilgrimage of the Sesqui Centennial Cross throughout Huron during 2006-07 will allow for this same reflection.

A cross from the Cathedral Church of St. Paul will depart from its current home in December of 2006 and begin a thirteen month pilgrimage around the Diocese.  The cross's design is such that the crucified Christ is bathed in a brilliant gold background light, while beneath, etched into the dark base, is the kneeling Christ, foot basin and towel at hand.  The starkly contrasting images remind us of the radiant glory of Christ's victorious resurrection, and our own calls to Christ-like humble servant hood. In the words of our Sesqui theme – light and life.

Each parish will have the chance to welcome this particular, communal cross of Christ into their midst and to reflect on what the cross has meant to them in the past, as well as what it is calling them to do now and in the future.  In addition, the presence of the cross from the see city will provide parishes the opportunity to consider their place and their role in the wider Diocesan family, and the Church throughout the world.

Taking stewardship of the cross for one day or a few will allow for different communities to come together around this central symbol of our faith.  Accompanying the cross will be a journal, where people may share their reflections, thoughts and prayers.  It is hoped that pictures and live video will be taken, and submitted for uploading on the Sesquicentennial website, so that people throughout the Diocese, and Diocesan family members who live abroad might follow the cross's progression.

We are called to be disciples of Jesus, living lives in His service, working for justice and carrying the Cross of Christ in the world.  Take up the cross as it arrives in your midst!

Update on the Cross Pilgrimage

Have you seen it?  Has it come down your street?  Has it been processed into your church?  (I should ask, has it processed into the building where you gather for worship?)  Because it is most definitely out there; in the Church, that is.

The Sesquicentennial Cross began its diocesan-wide pilgrimage from St. Paul’s Cathedral on Advent I.  It has wend its way around Wellington and Perth Deaneries, and is currently working the crowds of Oxford, having arrived at Old St. Paul’s on the Fifth after Epiphany.  At the time of publication, it will have been to St. John’s Tillsonburg, St. James Ingersoll, and will be heading to Otterville, Delhi, then back to Woodstock.  Congregations have been coming together around this particular symbol of our faith and history.  Anglicans and Lutherans have worshipped together with the cross as a focus.  The Sesqui Cross has already been an instrument for reflection and meditation for ecumenical services, youth retreats and ACW meetings.

Once it has completed its tour of Oxford, the Sesqui Cross heads to Brant in March and Waterloo in April.  The Saugeens won’t see it until May, which, given the weather you poor folks have had to endure these past few weeks, is probably a good thing.  Like the Primate, the Three Cantors and you, the cross will be at 53rd Weekend, and then off for a tour of Huron Deanery in June.  Alas, Mike from Camlachie won’t see it until the July heat and humidity settle on Lambton.

Keep your eyes open.  It might be coming down your street or down your aisle one day soon!

The Rev. Catherine Ascah, Anglican Parish of North Lambton

Almighty and loving God, you have blessed us with the gift of this your Diocese of Huron.  We celebrate the way in which your Holy Spirit moved your clergy and people to elect your servant Benjamin Cronyn to Episcopal ministry in 1857.  We pray that you will accept the offering of our praise and thanksgiving   for the lives of those whose faithful service has been part of the life of this Diocese.

We dedicate ourselves to the ministry of Christian witness, which you have called us to live out in our own day and age.  May the Light of your Spirit shine in our lives, enabling us to fill your church with vigour and excitement, while ever walking in the Anglican way of moderation, tolerance and conciliation.  Guide us in the years ahead, as in years past, so that all that we say and do may bring honour to your name, through Jesus Christ who is our Light and Life.  Amen.
